The first induced colonic hyperplasia model in rats for endoscopic applications

This research, in the framework of the Piccolo project, has successfully developed a preclinical model of Colonic Hyperplasia in the species “Rattus Norvegicus” that recreates important characteristics of human hyperplasia such as the generation of new cells in the colonic mucosa and tissue growth, as well as the corresponding angiogenesis.

The creation of these growths respects the principles of reduction and refinement, and together with the high genotypic and phenotypic homogeneity of the Rattus norvegicus species, gives the developed model a high reproducibility that allows its use at an international scale.

The main advantages of the result are firstly a surgical model of colonic hyperplasia that solves limitations of other traditional models, secondly the reproducibility for subsequent studies and thirdly, that it is not necessary to use external agents placed in the submucosa of the colon wall.

The hyperplasia induction protocol gives this model an important translational value. It is useful for validation and development of endoscopic technology, for molecular studies, for optical biomarkers improvement and to discriminate between endoscopic findings.

The terms and details of this output will be openly accessible through publications in scientific journals at the scientific community´s disposal.
